Judge's Write Up (November theme - 'Black and White')
'Not easy to choose from so many great photographs, we loved the Dark City Streets by Paul Cook it looks so Dickension but ultra modern!, the Helper by Zak Waters is also a wonderful image but for us the winner has to be Fountain of Youth by KangaRu, it instantly says fun , youth and summer all in one go, an image well worthy of winning this months competition. Well done!'
Judge's Write Up (October theme - 'Macro')
Daily Mirror Picture Editor, Ian Down and Staff Photographer, James Vellacott judged the competition. Here's what they thought:
"We decided the winner was Edgar Steward with Mini Mini Eggs. The precision focusing coupled with the clever use of light used in an idea which we had never seen before, made the image stand out from the rest."
Judge's Write Up (September theme - 'Travel')
Daily Mirror Picture Editor, Ian Down and Staff Photographer, James Vellacott judged the competition. Here's what they thought:
"We were overwhelmed by the high standard of images entered in the 'Travel' competition. The powerful, colourful and vivid images illustrated the amazing natural light that can be found on our planet.
We've picked 'Roadside Repairs' by Darren Athersmith (dathersmith) as the winning image for the dual meaning to 'travel'. It was taken on a trip to Havana of a car which had clearly seen better travelling days and the jaded bright colour of the car contrasts beautifully with the road and vanishing point background. The dirty jeans of the man shows he was not willing to give up his classically stylish form of travel. The image has a great feel, features lovely lighting, it's pin sharp and it's a really clever use of the theme."
Well done to all those who were shortlisted and congratulations again to Darren who's won a fantastic photography kit jam-packed with goodies courtesy of our kind sponsors.
Judge's Write Up (August theme - 'Smile')
Daily Mirror Picture Editor, Ian Down and Staff Photographer, James Vellacott judged the competition. Here's what they thought:
"The standard of photography was outstanding. The images covered many aspects of photography from great timing, precision lighting and focusing through to clever ideas and effects.
This month the theme was 'Smile' and all the images had an uplifting or comedy feel to them. We studied them on the monitors at the Mirror picture desk, which caused some interest from the editors and journalists who all had their ideas of who should win. Mirror Picture Editor, Ian Down who watches over 30000 images that arrive at the Daily Mirror every day, and myself decided that the winning image should be:
You might smile, but it's my toe! By John Llywarch
This candid image captures perfectly the smile and happiness of the young chap as he plays with the grown-up's foot. The image is pin sharp and nicely exposed in the slightly awkward side lighting. It's images like this that become timeless and go on to be a historical testament to the era in which it was taken. It's a spontaneous and perfectly captured image of a happy moment in time."
