Gitzo product manager Andy Bennett showed ePHOTOzine.TV's Matt Grayson why the new Gitzo Ocean Traveler really is so special.
Continuously questioning “the standard” in tripod design and materials, Gitzo has developed the world’s first stainless steel tripod casting, and integrated the technology into its massively popular Traveler series to produce the new Ocean Traveler.
Coupled with Gitzo’s unique Carbon 6x material, the tripod offers an unbeatable combination of sturdiness whilst being extra light in weight, and being able to be used in the harshest of environments – even salt water – making this the ultimate travel companion for serious photographers.
Watch Andy explain below the background behind how the Ocean Traveler evolved and why it is setting the standard when it comes to tripod technology.
The stainless steel casting is made using an extreme production process involving a cutting edge technology called Metal Injection Moulding (MIM).
The casting is treated in a way that completely closes porosity, even at microscopic levels – something usually associated with the production of surgical equipment – eliminating any opportunity for corrosives substances to attack.
Unique to the Ocean Traveler, Gitzo has enhanced its well-known G-Lock leg locking system to suit the extreme environments this new model is likely to encounter. Called Ocean-Lock, the new locks include special inserts at both ends which minimise the amount of water and debris that may enter the tubes and mechanisms.
Derived from the automotive industry, the Ocean-Lock meets the highest standards in terms of sealing and longevity, and delivers the same performance as G-Lock: 20% increase in rigidity, faster operation and stronger locking with gravity effect.
The new Gitzo Ocean Traveler is available now at RRP £799.95 inc VAT.
